Audaxity Supports World Class Cancer Care Close to Home

Last summer’s Audaxity ride was an unforgettable experience for Tom Wittmann, MD.
He remembers enthusiastic cheers, clanging bells, and handmade banners spectators held alongside the 25-mile City Loop route. He’ll never forget the camaraderie among his fellow riders, and reaching the top of a steep hill without getting off his bike.
At some point during the action-packed day, “it really came back to me that, oh my gosh, I am a survivor,” Dr. Wittmann said. The MCW alumnus, retired family medicine doctor, and two-time survivor saw up close how impactful the movement to end cancer has become.
“It made my ride even more meaningful to know that I was supporting cancer research, here in our own community, which might someday provide new lifesaving treatment options,” he added.
His connection to MCW runs deep. Dr. Wittmann’s wife, Beth Erickson, MD, is a radiation oncologist at Froedtert Hospital. Their kids are currently in residency and medical school at MCW. And when it came to his own treatment, Dr. Wittmann knew he didn’t have to look far to receive the best care.
“People frequently ask about getting a second opinion down in Chicago, or at the Mayo Clinic, or MD Anderson, or Memorial Sloan Kettering. And I tell them, ‘we’ve got national and international world-class care right here, right down the road at Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin.’”
