9 Ride Day Tips to Keep You Safe, Comfortable, and Ready to End Cancer

Below are nine tips to help every rider prepare for Audaxity. These tips will keep you safe, comfortable, and confident as you roll out in support of cancer research. Remember, your safety—and the safety of the riders around you—should always be your top priority.

  1. Check Your Helmet

Helmets don’t last forever. The protective materials inside (like polypropylene) break down over time. If your helmet is older than 3–5 years, consider purchasing a new helmet—even if it looks fine on the outside.

  2. Inspect Your Tires

Properly inflated tires help prevent flats and improve performance. Check the tire’s sidewall for the recommended pressure and top off before each ride.

  3. Be Prepared for a Flat Tire

Always carry a spare tube, tire levers, and either a CO₂ cartridge with an adaptor or a small pump. Even if you don’t know how to change a tire yourself, having the tools on hand means someone else can help you quickly get back on the road.

  4. Brake Pad Check

Your brake pads should be soft enough to press your fingernail into. If they are rock-hard, replace them. Soft pads means reliable breaking—especially important when riding in a group.

  5. Keep Your Lights On

Use front and rear lights—even during the day! They increase your visibility to both drivers and other cyclists.

  6. Use Signals and Ride Predictably

Always signal turns and stops, and never brake suddenly without warning. Other riders are often close behind.

  7. Hydration Matters

Even on a cooler day, staying hydrated is key. Equip your bike with a water bottle and make use of the rest stops to refill.

  8. Invest in Padded Shorts

If you’ve never tried them, padded bike shorts might just change your life (or at least your ride!) The extra cushioning makes a difference on all ride routes.

  9. Visibility Is Everything

Choose high-visibility colors to make sure you’re seen by drivers and other riders. Reppin’ the official Audaxity jersey? You’ll definitely stand out! This special-edition jersey will be available for riders ready to go the distance— available for those registered for the 25-, 50-, or 100 mile-ride. Not only will you look great, but you’ll be also riding in style and safety.

One Last Thought…

Remember, you’re riding for a purpose. By preparing well, you’ll have more fun, feel more confident, and help keep yourself and your fellow riders safe. And that means you can focus on what really matters: eradicating cancer, one mile at a time.
